Map-21 Transportation Authorization and why it matters to you!
June 29, 2012 Congress passed legislation entitled "Map-21 Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century". This new authorization funds federal transportation policy through September, 2014 and nearly doubles the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). This represents a tremendous success for the roadway safety industry in an era of strict fiscal constraint. For the first time in several years Map-21 provides federal dollars and matching federal funds to state transportation budgets for long term transportation projects and targeted roadway improvements. For our industry this signals increased dollars for nationwide comprehensive project planning as states will have access to a more reliable and consistent source of funding.

High-Friction Roads
What is HFS? HFS stands for high friction surfacing. Sometimes referred to as anti-skid surfacing, these are essentially topical road surface treatments that allow for safer and shorter stopping and vehicle control distances. Typically an anti-abrasive aggregate is affixed to a road surface using either a "hot-applied" or "cold applied" resin bond. These treatments are being increasingly requested by local and state DOT's as demand for reduction in injury and fatality is driven by both local concern and federal mandate. In response Sherwin Williams and its employees have been in the forefront of testing and development of appropriate materials and application techniques. In addition, Sherwin Williams's technical team has partnered with American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) by participating in their High Friction Surfacing Committee.
